Letter from the Superintendent - Parent Notification

Dear Parents / Guardians,

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of America will experience a solar eclipse. Some areas will witness a total eclipse (when the moon entirely covers the sun) while other regions will witness a partial eclipse.  The Salinas area is anticipating a partial eclipse.

If the skies are clear our area will experience a 76% eclipse, with the moon beginning to cover the sun at 9:01 a.m., reaching maximum coverage at 10:16 a.m., and ending at 11:37 a.m. The only safe way to witness the solar eclipse would be with special-purpose solar eclipse glasses, which the district is unable to provide to all students.

Safety is our first priority for all Salinas City Elementary School District students and staff. Therefore, our students will remain inside during the two and a half hour window of the solar eclipse.  All schools will observe a modified rainy day schedule during this time period.

For any questions, please contact your child/children’s school.

Martha Martinez, Superintendent
