Through the promotion of physical, mental, and social growth, school nurses work to maximize the achievement and well-being of students. As the primary health care provider within the educational environment, the school nurse shares in the responsibility of directing growth towards the achievement of each student's maximum potential, both as a student and as a member of the community.
If you have questions please contact any of our District Nurses Paulette Deyo Stohlmann, Brando Gorlero, and Yen Do-Gorlero.
Salinas City Elementary School District (SCESD) is committed to the wellness and optimal development of every student. SCESD has developed a new Wellness Policy (BP #5030) that outlines the District’s approach to ensuring opportunities for all students to practice healthy eating and physical activity throughout the school day.
Please see below for a few important details within the policy:
A complete food service program, in accordance with Federal and State nutrition standards and regulations, will be provided.
The program will support students’ wellness through physical education, activity coordination, nutrition education and services in a safe and healthy school environment.
Group celebrations may only take place once a month after the designated lunch period
Homemade offerings are not allowed, only commercial items may be offered when shared among students.
We have many students throughout the District with life threatening food allergies (anaphylaxis), please observe posted food allergy signs and do not bring those food items into classrooms.
Non-food items (for example: stickers, pencils, crayons) are recommended, however if food items are offered they should meet USDA nutrition standards such as:
Fresh Fruits & Vegetables
Air popped popcorn
We appreciate your support and cooperation as we implement this very important Wellness Policy to better serve the students of Salinas City Elementary School District. Please note, this policy is pending Board approval as of September 2019.
