RESOLUTION 2024-25/23
RECOGNIZING MARCH 31, 2025, AS CESAR E. CHAVEZ DAY
WHEREAS, Cesar E. Chavez emerged as a transformational leader of the 20th century, inspiring millions to advocate for economic justice, civil rights, and political empowerment; and
WHEREAS, born into a family of migrant farm workers, Cesar E. Chavez firsthand experienced the challenges of field labor, leading him to establish the United Farm Workers of America (UFW) in 1962 to advance farm workers' rights, ensure safe working conditions, and secure fair wages; and
WHEREAS, drawing inspiration from the nonviolent philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Chavez led peaceful movements, including strikes, boycotts, and marches, to bring national attention to the struggles of farm workers and demand justice; and
WHEREAS, Cesar E. Chavez championed the power of education, recognizing it as a means for social transformation and self-empowerment, stating: "Real education should consist of drawing the goodness and the best out of our own students... The end of all education should surely be service to others. "; and
WHEREAS, his lifelong commitment to equity, CIVIC engagement, and leadership development continues to inspire generations to serve their communities and advocate for meaningful change;and
WHEREAS, the State of California recognizes March 31 as Cesar E. Chavez Day, encouraging schools to honor his legacy through community service, civic participation, and educational activities focused on the farm labor movement and Chavez's enduring impact; and
WHEREAS, the Salinas City Elementary School District remains committed to fostering a culture of leadership, social justice, and community service, ensuring that students understand the importance of advocacy, resilience, and collective action;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Trustees of the Salinas City Elementary School District hereby designates March 31, 2025, as Cesar E. Chavez Day and encourages all students, staff, and families to participate in district-approved community service projects, classroom discussions, and learning opportunities that reflect the life, work, and values of Cesar E. Chavez.
