About Fentanyl and Naloxone

We want to share important information about the drug fentanyl, how it can cause a risk of a fatal overdose and steps members of our community can take to protect themselves and their children.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is often used in hospitals to treat severe pain, but it has also become one of the most dangerous drugs in our communities. It is many times stronger than other opioids, and just a small amount can be deadly. Sadly, fentanyl has been linked to a rising number of overdoses—especially among young people—who may not even realize they are taking it. This drug has deeply affected families and communities across the country, including many who are already facing challenges in accessing healthcare and support.

Why is Fentanyl so dangerous?

One of the biggest dangers is that fentanyl is often hidden in fake pills that look just like real medicine, such as pills for pain, anxiety, or even ADHD. These pills are sometimes shared among young people or found online, and it’s not always clear they are unsafe. Children in elementary school may be too young to understand these risks, which is why adult guidance and supervision are so important. Please make sure your children only take medication given to them by a doctor or pharmacist, and talk to older siblings or family members about never sharing pills. By staying informed and connected, we can protect our children and keep our communities safe.

What is Naloxone?

You may have heard of a medicine called Naloxone (also known by the brand name Narcan). It is a medicine that can save a life if someone is having an opioid overdose, including from fentanyl. It works by quickly reversing the effects of the drug and giving the person a chance to breathe and get emergency help. Naloxone is safe to use and easy to carry—it comes as a nasal spray, and anyone can use it in an emergency. In many parts of California, naloxone is available at pharmacies without a prescription, and some schools and community centers are making it more accessible. While young children are not the ones using this medicine, it’s important for adults to know it exists and how to use it.

Having Naloxone at home, just like a first aid kit, can be one more way we protect our families and respond with care if someone we know is ever in danger.

Where can I get Naloxone?

In Salinas, Naloxone can be obtain for free at the following locations:

Salinas Adult School: Students and families can obtain Naloxone for free at the Salinas Adult School located at 20 Sherwood Place, Salinas, CA 93906.

Community Human Services (CHS): CHS offers free Naloxone kits and provides information on local treatment options for those struggling with substance use disorder. CHS is located at 1083 S. Main St., and people can walk in and request Narcan kits to take home.

In addition, each of our schools has a supply of Naloxone and each health technician has been trained in its use.

Below are videos that explain how to administer Naloxone, in English, Spanish and Mixteco. Please remember that Naloxone is a safe and effective drug, and isn't harmful even if a child accidentally sprays it into their nose or mouth. Keeping it on hand can help save a life.
