In May 2025, the State of California awarded the District $12.1-million to establish Community Schools at nine campuses. This transformative investment is part of the California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP)—a groundbreaking, $4.1-billion initiative and the largest of its kind in the nation—designed to eliminate barriers to learning and ensure equitable outcomes for all students.

Community Schools serve as neighborhood hubs, connecting educators, school staff, families and local partners to support students' academic and social-emotional needs. By offering integrated services, such as mental and physical health care, academic support, social services and after school enrichment, Community Schools create environments where all students can thrive.

Each of the nine sites chosen by the state to become a Community School has launched a steering committee, supported by the District's Community Schools Coordinator and a District steering committee that includes representatives from the city, higher education, the business community, labor partners and District staff, to help shape the school-specific implementation plans. These committees will bring together principals, staff, community partners and upper-grade students to ensure services and supports are tailored to each school's unique contexts and strengths.
